Criminal Defense Trials, Writs, and Appeals
- Mr. Reed began his criminal law career as a certified paralegal. In that capacity he did substantive work on over 500 cases, many of which were serious or violent felonies. Additionally, Mr. Reed worked on several high profile death penalty cases in Monterey County, including multiple murders, murder by lying in wait, murder by torture, and murder for financial gain. One of these cases resulted in a published opinion on appeal regarding the scope and admissibility of expert testimony on firearm ballistic comparisons. (People v. Azcona (2020) 58 Cal.App.5th 504.)
- As an attorney in the trial court, Mr. Reed has tried special circumstance homicides, homicides, attempted homicides, and other felonies. In the Courts of Appeal, Mr. Reed is a panel attorney for all six appellate districts in California. Recently, Mr. Reed briefed DiMaggio v. Superior Court (H051516) which resulted in a published Fourth Amendment victory in a pretrial writ proceeding.
- Mr. Reed recently briefed and argued a juvenile case in the California Supreme Court, winning a published victory in In re F.M. (2023) 14 Cal.5th 701.
- In addition to appeals and jury trials, Mr. Reed has experience handling parole proceedings, juvenile proceedings, writs of habeas corpus, writs of mandate and prohibition, and a wide variety of post-conviction proceedings and resentencings.
